Comic 779 -- Sakrament Abbey

Sorry for the delay! Here's the new comic:

Bad luck and bad timing can undo even the best-laid plans, unfortunately. This was true of my scheduling this month... and for Gail, Sax, and Hayaka's plan to snatch Emilia from Vigil's secret hospital.

UPDATE: Whoops! I screwed up some links. Try again if you couldn't see the page before.

Hey, no problem. Real life happens. But here's a plot twist... maybe Ivanna wants that cure because she herself secretly suffers from vampirism. Maybe her name is short for Ivannadreenkyourblood! Then again, maybe not.

I'm fairly certain that those are Grogan and Warwick I'm seeing talking to Ivanna in the flashback? Also, has she seen a photo of Gail as part of being briefed on Stella's joining? And/or as part of Vigil's investigation of the sisters?

Hi Terranovan,

Yes, that's Grogan and Warwick. I couldn't resist adding that sweet wig to Warwick.

And we can be sure all of the Vessels have seen at least the basics on Gail, since Stella has attempted to mobilize Vigil to find Gail and bring her in alive. There's a large amount of Vigil political shuffling that always goes on behind the scene, but I try not to put too much of it on the page (in order to keep from boring or overwhelming readers).

Now, does Gail recognize Krylov? We'll find that out next installment.

How did the avatars hide themselves before glasses were invented?

Hi Charles,

Well, as it happens, it was a combination of masks and social distancing.

Masks of all sorts (including helmets) could be enchanted to obscure the angelic glow from their eyes. Because it's inconvenient to wear masks, veils, helmets, wicker baskets, etc. around all the time even if your culture allows it, they also tended to be rather aloof and cloistered... which was a heck of a lot easier to do prior to the 12th century, especially if you had money and power (which they always had).

Vigil began using enchanted glasses around the 12th century, and their adoption of this new method grew as the practice of wearing specs spread globally. Glasses had numerous advantages, not the least of which is that the Vessels could socially mingle with much greater ease.

And... there you have it! The secret history of Vigil's specialized headgear.
